Going Home To A Sligo That I Didn’t Know Existed

Posted on October 7th, by Peter Parkorr in Ireland, Picture Perfect. 24 comments
Today I’m posting some very brief highlights of a great road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way in the North West of Ireland, and Sligo specifically. My mum is going to love this post. Steady, Mum. Some observers’ highlights of the trip (which was part of TBEX Dublin) have already reached the papers and radio stations here, and I have such fantastic recordings to reveal over the coming days, but first here’s a touch of the magic I felt so far, and the reasons why… Some background for you: Half of my family is Irish, and most of the generation above me (on my mothers side) either grew up in Sligo or spent a lot of time there, in the place that my grandparents lived for the last few decades.…

The Other Great Siege of Malta in Photos

A series of rough seas pictures from Malta, that I’ve decided to call The Other Great Siege of Malta. The actual Great Siege of Malta was a long and bloody affair between Christians from the West and the Ottoman Empire to the East. You can read a great account of the build up and outcome of the events in 1565 on this post by ilovemalta.com.mt (a website dedicated to Maltese gastronomy, which there is plenty of.) However, when I visited Malta and Gozo, I witnessed another attack on the islands that still goes on today.…

Emphasis on Experience: Studying Italian in Rome

Earlier this year I spent a month studying Italian in Rome, taking two weeks of lessons at an Italian language school. I made some great progress there and in Sicily afterwards, gabbing away in my patchy Italian whenever I had an excuse. Whether you prefer to learn the language before you visit a place or you don’t mind jumping into the deep end, here’s why I think you should learn Italian in Italy, and Rome in particular.…

Recently, a few travel bloggers and I made a Youtube video full of great travel photography tips for beginners. Using Google Plus, we recorded a live streaming ‘Hangout On Air’ on the subject of travel photography; what camera to buy, what camera equipment is best for backpacking, and how to take the best photos in different situations. One of the first travel photos I took with a DSLR – Dusk over the Mediterranean from my hostel in Gozo, Malta In this episode of Room For Travel, your hosts are Alexander Koval from Out-n-About.de, Ash Clark from TheMostAlive.com, Flavio Alagia from NonSoloTuristi.it, and myself  – Peter Parkorr, from Travel Unmasked.…

Young Tibetan Monks at Namdroling Monastery, Karnataka

Posted on July 23rd, by Peter Parkorr in India, Picture Perfect. No Comments
When I spent a few months in India in 2010, I visited the Namdroling Monastery Golden Temple in Bylakuppe, the home to thousands of Tibetan monks, not far from Mysore in Karnataka. I recently guest-posted a photo essay from the day trip on the site of my friend and fellow blogger Steve. Head over there to see the rest of my photographs from Namdroling Monastery on back-packer.org.…
