Have you ever been to a Scottish celebration of Hogmanay? They really know how to mark an occasion up there. It’s a great way to welcome in the New Year, and here’s my first video from this year’s events to show you why. Five Scottish pipe bands and 26 Up Helly Aa Vikings from the Shetlands lead over 35,000 people and 7,000 torches through the streets of Edinburgh up to Calton Hill in the Hogmanay Torchlight Procession 2012.…

3… 2… 1…. ‘Happy Hogmanay, Happy Hogmanay!’ – The cheers went up, the smiles grew wide, and the thousands of people gathered in Edinburgh all tried to hug each other at once. We sang Auld Lang Syne with enthusiasm, after being dazzled by hundreds of stunning fireworks that blasted the black sky into colour. Edinburgh Castle sat smoking above us, and on the main stage Simple Minds started up their instruments again.…

With less than a fortnight of 2012 left, and only one day until the ‘end of the world’ according to the Mayan calendar, I’m getting prepared to break in the New Year in style. The ‘end of the world’ is a complete misnomer, actually being the predicted date of a new and better age for humanity (we’ll see), so I’ve got plans to see out the old year and bring in the new at Edinburghs Hogmanay celebrations.…

A Very Award-ing Safestay at WTM London

When I headed to London in early November for the World Travel Market 2012, it was my first time seeing the capital properly for a few years. The week’s accommodation was kindly provided for me by London’s newest hostel outfit,¬†Safestay¬†in Elephant & Castle. After a busy few days pitching tourist boards and many a PR person, it was good to let off steam at the Hostelbookers Travel Blogger Awards, taking some cheeky snaps while socialising with a few industry people and heaps of bloggers.…
