Going Home To A Sligo That I Didn’t Know Existed

Posted on October 7th, by Peter Parkorr in Ireland, Picture Perfect. 24 comments
Today I’m posting some very brief highlights of a great road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way in the North West of Ireland, and Sligo specifically. My mum is going to love this post. Steady, Mum. Some observers’ highlights of the trip (which was part of TBEX Dublin) have already reached the papers and radio stations here, and I have such fantastic recordings to reveal over the coming days, but first here’s a touch of the magic I felt so far, and the reasons why… Some background for you: Half of my family is Irish, and most of the generation above me (on my mothers side) either grew up in Sligo or spent a lot of time there, in the place that my grandparents lived for the last few decades.…

The Other Great Siege of Malta in Photos

A series of rough seas pictures from Malta, that I’ve decided to call The Other Great Siege of Malta. The actual Great Siege of Malta was a long and bloody affair between Christians from the West and the Ottoman Empire to the East. You can read a great account of the build up and outcome of the events in 1565 on this post by ilovemalta.com.mt (a website dedicated to Maltese gastronomy, which there is plenty of.) However, when I visited Malta and Gozo, I witnessed another attack on the islands that still goes on today.…

Discovering a different Tuscany: Photos from Versilia

A recent invitation to explore Versilia in Tuscany had me expecting corn fields and countryside, traditional Italian cooking, and picnics after a good days hike. I’m sure you can do all those things quite easily, but this trip to Tuscany was a little alternative… You can see my musings and photos from Tuscany in the trip write-up for BudgetTraveller.org, called ‘Five ways Versilia won’t be the Tuscany you expected’, and below I’m publishing a few more photos from Versilia that show yet more of the alternative side to Tuscany.…

When I spent a few months in India in 2010, I visited the Namdroling Monastery Golden Temple in Bylakuppe, the home to thousands of Tibetan monks, not far from Mysore in Karnataka. I recently guest-posted a photo essay from the day trip on the site of my friend and fellow blogger Steve. Head over there to see the rest of my photographs from Namdroling Monastery on back-packer.org.…

Canned Candids: Friendly faces from Triplicane, Chennai

Posted on June 21st, by Peter Parkorr in India, Picture Perfect. 12 comments
I spent a few days in Chennai on my recent trip to India, and really enjoyed staying in the Triplicane district. Not wanting to do much touristy stuff, I was quite happy getting some work done in my hotel, and then take little wanders about the nearby streets during the mornings or evenings to get some good pictures of the Triplicane locals.…
